WHAT IS AN ISLAMIC MISSIONARY?

by Ustaz Syed Hasan Alatas

Spreading the words to follow Allah's path was the work of prophets and messengers of Allah. The act of spreading Allah's word was never a small and easy task. In fact, it requires great sacrifices.

The Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, for example, reached to human beings with great patience and in a gentle manner.  More than often, his gentle preachings were met with sneers, name calling, curses, acts of stone throwing and a whole host of other challenges. Though almost always difficult and demanding, the Prophet continued with his duty of spreading Allah's word with great perseverance.

The inhabitants of Taif once ordered their children to throw stones and hard objects at the Prophet.  In response to their mean deeds, the Prophet, covered with blood, prayed to Allah and uttered these words: "Oh Allah, please show my people the correct path as they have yet to learn the truth".

The act of showing humans the correct path and to leave evil deeds is a noble act.  Humans have a tendency to forget and it is because of this forgetful nature that they need constant reminders.

Much of the damage to the sea and earth has been caused by human actions alone. Observe the environment.  Much damage has already been done to not only our physical world but also the human body and spirit.

The sacred act of worshipping God has now been extended to worshipping humans, material goods, power and other worldly desires. The impact of this multitude of worshipping act is the destruction of the iman (faith), moral, and incurs  various other destruction.

A prerequisite to spreading the word of Allah is the need to have an in-depth knowledge especially on what is being preached.  He or she who preaches needs also to have sincere intentions, in other words, he or she does it only for Allah's sake and with no other motives.  He or she must be morally fit, gentle, loving,  friendly  and aspire to follow the Prophet Muhammad's, peace be upon him, ways.

He or she who preaches must set a good example to the people that he or she is spreading the words to. In other words, to lead by example since this is certainly more effective than the utterances of mere words.  He or she must avoid harsh ways, utterances of curses, gossips, and back stabbing in order to be a truly effective preacher.

Insya Allah the Merciful will allow us to meet again.
